Abstract: Developing countries are experiencing the full impact of globalization ; yet they remain resistant to societal changes, including gender equality, due to the weight of prevailing cultural norms among local populations. Persistent gender inequality hinders social and economic development and increases deprivation. However, is such discrimination the norm in all enterprises in developing countries ? This article examines the case of a large, fast-growing, and internationally expanding Algerian private company to study the gender effects of wage differentials. The theoretical framework is divided into three sub-sections. In the first, we provide an overview of the literature on the issue of gender equality in developing countries. The research shows that women in these countries suffer from two types of discri- mination : the limited number of sectors of activity to which they have access and lower wages than those received by their male counterparts. In the second, we mobilize human capital theory to explain the link between wages, gender and skill level. This theory contributes to the explanation of the gender wage gap. Finally, we considered the socio- demographic variables (parenthood, marital status, age) that can influence wage equality. The empirical substrate is based on a collection of salary data for this company for the year 2016. The base includes information on annual salaries (in DA converted into euros), gender, type of contract, seniority, age, function, socio-professional category, marital status and level of education.
