Abstract: Learning a trade depends on several factors. In the specific case of on-the-job apprenticeship in the building trades, it is a question of specifying the determinants of apprenticeship in masonry. Field data reveal that three key players interact: the apprentice whose motivation is essential, the apprenticeship supervisor through his qualities as a good manager and the constituent elements of the site as an environment conducive to learning. Beyond all these elements, it emerges that the key player remains the apprentice on whom the entire learning process rests. Because the apprentice modifies their relationship by finally adapting to each other to make the learning process a reality. Hence the AMC model of masonry apprenticeship linked to the apprentice's motivation (A), the master's follow-up (M) and the site environment (C).
