Abstract:
" And Rose, she lived as live the roses, for the space of a morning " (F. de Malherbe, 1599). This would be a very poetic way to describe what the world banana market went through between 2022 and 2023. These two glorious years saw a big gain for banana prices, thereby offsetting the big cost increases which all the agricultural and industrial sectors have had to face, though also, for some, providing an opportunity to invest in sustainability matters. As a reminder, since 2015 the European banana market had been obstinately destroying economic value. Unfortunately, 2024 could see the end of the respite. The year is opening with forecasts of price falls under the pretext of stemming general inflation, except that the banana has never been responsible for surging food prices, quite the opposite. Nonetheless, let us hope that the transitions vital for building more sustainable sectors do not become collateral victims of a suicidal trade policy.
