Abstract: The automotive sector is a vital sector in the worldwide economy which has always been a testing ground for managerial methods. Referring to recent business environmental changes, the Agile manifesto has provided solutions not only for the software industry but also for other business sectors where traditional methods have proven to be inefficient. However, the adoption of agile project management methodology in the physical product development, especially in the automotive industry remains relatively limited. Moreover, research on agile methodology in automotive industry is still in early stage. This research intends to reduce this theoretical gap by identifying and understanding the barriers of the implementation of Agile project management methodology (APMM) in automotive sector. Hence, we will proceed by a qualitative exploratory methodology based on semi-structured interviews with automotive and Agile experts from USA, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Morocco, and France. The findings should support project management practitioners' and decision makers to address the barriers by drawing a real picture of the current worldwide situation in terms of implementation of AM in the field of the automotive industry, considering the specificity of the sector. The preliminary results show that some barriers cross different activities, from software development to the production of components for the automotive industry, such time constraints and cost. Further, the research highlights specific barriers: tradition of mechanical development, organisational structure, heavy investments, variety of products and projects, budgeting cycles, purchasing contracts system, mass production.
