Abstract: The growth of a firm has often been described theoretically as a biological process following a life cycle where decline is located inevitably after the stages of creation, expansion and then maturity. An integrative model of growth following rather dynamic states seems to better describe the reality of SMEs. The objective of this article is to understand the role played by the board of directors in supporting a SME throughout its dynamic states of growth. The results show how, for each "state," a specific role of the board of directors predominates. They also show the existence of some triggering events supporting the company's transition from one growth "state" to another one.
