The future of entrepreneurship in hospitality and tourism: A research agenda

Abstract: This study develops an expansive research agenda to advance the field of Hospitality and Tourism (H&T) entrepreneurship. Through a bibliometric analysis of 105 articles published in top-tier journals over the past 25 years, the research employs co-citation, historical direct citation, and co-occurrence analyses complemented by qualitative evaluations. These methodologies reveal the theoretical underpinnings, prevailing themes, and their evolution within the field. Four distinct research areas emerge: (1) entrepreneurial orientation and rural tourism, (2) gender, place identity, and entrepreneurial motivation, (3) social and digital entrepreneurship, and (4) innovation, social capital, and interdisciplinary topics. The study also synthesizes research recommendations from the literature and proposes a future-oriented agenda with 40 research questions, offering a roadmap for advancing scholarship in H&T entrepreneurship.
