Abstract:
The wine sector faces the dual challenge of profitability while meeting societal expectations for more sustainable production, in a changing climatic and economic environment. In this frame, the authors propose to provide here a picture of the French wine sector over the last two decades. Using data from the French Farm Accounting Data Network (Réseau d'information comptable agricole-RICA), we study the evolution of winegrowing farms in metropolitan France in terms of structure and performance over the period 2002-2021. Figures show that winegrowing farms have expanded and have experienced a decrease in yield and economic performance per hectare, but an increase in economic performance when calculated per annual working unit. Winegrowing farms have substantially reduced their crop protection costs but have increased the cost of contracting work.
