Abstract: At a time when contemporary transformations of capitalism are reigniting debates over the concrete and lived forms of labor, as well as the conditions of its socialization, this article examines Marx's and Proudhon's conceptions of cooperation and machinery. While both acknowledge the centrality of collective activity in the production process, they offer divergent readings that unfold across analytical and political, but also ecological dimensions.
