Abstract: Fiat currencies like the Dollar and the Euro are not sound money because they are subject to inflation. A sound money, in the economic sense, is a non-inflationary currency. The discussion focuses first on the question of monetary freedom as a strategy for sound money. If choice is given to money users, they may prefer sound currencies over inflationary ones. Technological innovations make possible the emergence of sound currencies in the context of electronic commerce, the main obstacle remains the monetary debasement practiced by governments in order to finance public deficits.
