Abstract: The aim of this article is to explore the role of the Exit Champion (EC) in the context of organisational innovation projects. It aims to analyse the functioning of the EC and its opposition to innovation, which remains under-explored compared to pro-innovation roles. Inspired by role theory and drawing on the limited existing research on opposition, the study adopts an auto-ethnographic approach. Based on the experience of a HRD assuming the role of EC, the article analyses the tensions, emotional issues and tactics associated with opposition to innovation. Three contributions were made: firstly, the EC mobilises a tactical diversity comparable to that of the champion; secondly, EC does not act alone; finally, being an EC implies bearing significant emotional costs arising from personal and professional role conflicts. The article examines the role of the EC, its internal/external conflicts, and shows how, by mobilising allies, it contributes to opposition to innovation, thus offering new perspectives to previous research.
