Abstract: This article examines the evolution of transparency in business practices, particularly in the agri-food sector. It traces how companies initially resisted transparency demands before embracing information disclosure as a competitive advantage. The study explores blockchain technology as a potential solution to transparency challenges in supply chains while highlighting its implications for confidentiality and secrecy. By analyzing transparency processes within the context of surveillance capitalism, the article discusses the power dynamics, knowledge control, and decision-making that shape blockchain adoption. It reveals contradictions between the rhetoric of transparency and its practical implementation in blockchain-based projects. Specifically, while blockchain can enhance transparency, it also allows actors to selectively control information disclosure, maintaining elements of confidentiality. The findings highlight the importance of understanding the motivations behind transparency efforts and their impact on different stakeholders. The study raises critical questions about the practical application of blockchain for supply chain transparency and calls for further research on its long-term implications.
