Abstract:
Commercial ready-to-use seed mixtures meet the needs of farmers seeking to benefit from mixed cropping but lacking the time or technical expertise to prepare their own mixtures. This article aims to describe the market for ready-to-use seed mixtures and to identify the constraints limiting its development. The analysis is based on semi-structured interviews with stakeholders involved in bread wheat varietal mixtures, forage maize varietal mixtures, and mixtures of forage species. Although seed mixtures can provide benefits to farmers and contribute to reducing pesticide use, the resulting products are not always accepted by downstream actors in the value chain. Moreover, compared with seeds of pure varieties, ready-to-use mixtures involve more complex design, production and marketing processes. Barriers to generating and disseminating information on the performance of these mixtures may also hinder their wider adoption.
