Abstract:
Addiction is a major public health issue that calls for the development of effective strategies against it. In order to adapt intervention methods, especially in regard to the complex relationship between the consumers and the objects of their addiction, it is mandatory to understand the capacity for choice among the individuals affected. Here, we propose considering addiction as a specific case of akrasia—choosing against one's best interest—and describe what happens during the actual choice to consume when everything seems to rationally oppose it. We present the ways in which options are evaluated, the particularities of choice in addiction, and suggest the existence of prior judgments that set precedents and influence these choices. We involve stress as a common factor in all addictions to explain the particular weight of the chosen option. Finally, we highlight the mechanisms of confusion and ambivalence that affect decision-making in addiction and propose an approach to clarify this confusion regarding the options truly available in such decisions.
