Abstract: Study paths in France are still very much based on a linear model. However, a relative delinearisation appears to have begun, as evidenced by an increase in temporary interruptions to studies and the institutionalisation of the academic break in 2015. Using Génération data on young people who left higher education in 2017, this study aims to quantify and characterise temporary interruptions during studies and then measure their impact on professional integration. The results show that the norm of linearity still applies in France, where the labour market generally devalues discontinuous study paths. Only 'justified' breaks confer an advantage, and then only for the most privileged groups.
