Abstract: On the basis of the study of one hundred publications, this work distinguishes three major website evaluation approaches, analyzing websites as information systems, as communication channels, or as retailing channels. Having looked at the respective advantages and drawbacks of each of the three approaches, a synthetic approach links these three concepts. A more frequent use of cross-concepts, such as media richness as well as virtual affordances and flow could draw these three approaches closer together and give rise to common evaluation indicators.
