Working Papers from HAL

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present an overview of the « responsible innovation » concept. This concept was first defined at the beginning of the 21st century. It then spread around the world, driven by the European Commission. Firstly, we present the roots of this concept which are based on, on the one hand, the philosophical approach of "researchers and engineers responsibility", and on the other hand, technological assessment. Then, we describe how the concept of "responsible research and innovation" has grown progressively in European research and innovation politics, in order to bring science and innovation closer to society. Lastly, we describe how this concept is used in companies in connection with their social responsibility.
