Valorisation des droits audiovisuels du football et équilibre économique des clubs professionnels - Impacts d’une concurrence croissante inter-sports et intra-sport pour la Ligue 1 de football

Abstract: The pricing of audiovisual rights to sports competitions is a key variable in the financial balance of professional clubs, particularly French football clubs. The ability to obtain a satisfactory price from competitive procedures for the allocation of rights will depend on the intensity of competition for the market and the intrinsic quality of the rights for broadcasters. Depending on whether the rights appear to be 'essential' resources (in other words unavoidable for broadcasters), premia or easily substitutable with other content, the outcome of the auction will be very different. The question here is whether the value of rights to French League 1 could be eroded by growing competition from other sports or other football competitions, and what impact this could have on the economic viability of professional clubs.
