Abstract: As the 2030 Agenda reaches its midpoint, the capacity of sustainable development to achieve the SDGs is being called into question, particularly in the Global South, where resource constraints and misuse are impeding its implementation. This article analyses the ways in which the structure of North-South relations creates inequalities, thereby highlighting the necessity to redefine institutional, financial and democratic frameworks to better integrate justice and sustainability. It presents a new narrative around just transitions which is being increasingly employed in international climate negotiations and is also being adopted in Global South planning as a means of addressing the common challenges of decarbonization (labor market informality, energy poverty, dependence on international finance, lack of data).
