Abstract:

This study aims at describing shifts in horizontal sex segregation in the Swedish labour market between 1990 and 2003. The study adds to previous studies by exploring changes in three dimensions of horizontal sex segregation, i.e. in workplace, organizational and occupational sex segregation, and by using data including all Swedes over 15 years of age at each year of measurement. The focus is on changes in the sex distribution at workplaces and on the changes that occurred during the recession in the beginning of the 1990s. The estimates show that there is hardly any change in the overall level of horizontal sex segregation in the Swedish labour market between 1990 and 2003. The trend towards a more equal sex distribution across occupations seems, however, to continue between 1990 and 2001, although the change between 2001 and 2003 is non-existing. Up until the recession in the mid-1990s, the level of workplace and organizational sex segregation decreased, but afterward it increased somewhat. Moreover, the greater outflow of men from the labour market during the recession can be one explanation to the decrease in share of employees at male dominated workplaces and increase in share of employees at highly female dominated workplaces at these time points. The study clearly shows that the political goals to sex integrate the Swedish labour market have not been realized. The Swedish labour market continues to be profoundly horizontally sex segregated to present day, and the analyses give no optimistic view on future changes towards labour market sex integration.
