Abstract: The article discusses the trends which characterised the Danish economy in the 20th century. It is shown how the labour force switched from agriculture to urban production, and later to the private service sector and to the public sector. It is further demonstrated that a major trend was a switch from labour-intensive activities to capital investment and high technology. The trends seen during the century are compared with L.V. Birck’s forecast made in 1900. It is argued that a continued real growth of around 2 per cent is likely to continue in the 21st century. However, a serious problem for the unskilled section of the labour force may be a bias towards skilled labour in the production sector
