Abstract:
The need and scope for economic policy are discussed from the perspective of the problems and challenges posed by tighter international integration. Since international integration affects economic structures, it changes but does not eliminate the need and scope for economic policy. A particular challenge is how to ensure the provision of sufficient social insurance when current modes of financing are eroded due to the increased mobility of tax bases. The need for international coordination of economic policy to cope with different forms of externalities, to be strengthened by further international integration, is also discussed.
