Abstract:
In 1938, the Oslo-based Aschehoug publishing company printed Trygve Hoff’s book Økonomisk kalkulasjon i socialistiske samfund (Economic Calculation in the Socialist Society). This book examined the possibility of procuring the necessary data for rational economic calculations in a socialist economy. In this article we firstly introduce the author and describe the book’s initial reception. Then we sketch the historical background and provide a summary of HoV’s main points. After that, we discuss more thoroughly how this book came to be forgotten and we reXect on the consequences this oversight may have had on (i) the education of Norwegian economists and (ii) Norway’s post-war economy.
