Abstract:
This analytical newsletter is devoted to the analysis of the main educational trajectories and features of university choice upon admission to bachelor's, specialist's and master's programs. Based on the data of the student survey which took place in 2020/21 within the framework of the project "Monitoring of Education Markets and Organizations", it is shown that: The most common reasons for university choice by undergraduate students are indicators of the quality of higher education. At the same time, more than half of the respondents are determined with the choice of a university in advance, almost a year before admission; The Unified State Exam is the main mechanism for admission to higher education. For most subjects, there is a positive relationship between the USE results and family SES, as well as schooling background. Variations in these characteristics can lead to inequalities upon university admission; Student mix is different depending on the type of university. Students from families with higher education, high income, graduates of specialized schools and classes are more represented in leading universities. Thus, in conditions of high differentiation in the quality of higher education, family and school can act as barriers of access to higher education of a high quality; Students who used the USE results for admission, on average, have a better academic performance than students who were admitted via Olympiads. A non-linear relationship was found between the USE results and the current academic performance of undergraduate students; Most master students continue their studies immediately after graduating from the bachelor's degree, the experience of studying in the programs of which is the main reason for choosing a university. About a third of students note the characteristics of the quality of the university; Among graduate students, students with a high family SES are more represented, which indicates inequality in access to higher education at the master's level; The level of educational mobility upon admission to the master's program is moderate.
