Abstract:
The bulletin presents the analysis of possibilities for assurance the quality of higher education trough student engagement in Russian universities. The measurement of student engagement is a widespread approach to assess the higher education quality suggesting that students’ reasoning and skills are facilitated by the student participation in practices, which are available at a university. In this paper, we give an overview of Russian and foreign publications about student engagement and present the empirical data about the engagement of Russian students. Main conclusions: • Russian students reported high attendance of face-to-face classes as well as classes in hybrid and online formats. They most often participate in class discussions and make class presentations. On average, every second student engaged in co-education with other students, while student engagement in learning outside the class is lower. Student-faculty interaction is the most problematic aspect. Especially, for students, who need help from the instructor and cannot understand complicated learning materials by themselves. • Based on the analysis of student engagement indicators, we identified the following groups of risks: senior students and students, who are dissatisfied with learning at university. These students showed lower engagement, which eventually can lead to lower educational outcomes. • Student engagement indicators positively correlate with students’ GPA and their satisfaction with learning process. • The student engagement approach can be used as an instrument for internal evaluation of higher education quality to develop data-based educational policy and enrich the educational process. This approach should not be employed for creating university rankings or for external evaluation of universities. The important advantage of this approach is that student engagement indicators can inform policymakers about particular aspects of educational process, which require attention and contribute to higher education outcomes.
