Abstract:
The newsletter presents the analysis of patterns of combining study and work by PhD students of Russian universities and research organizations, as well as the analysis of the impact of combining study and work on the subsequent career and research success of PhD programs’ graduates. This study is based on the data from surveys of graduate students and PhD programs’ graduates, conducted as part of the Monitoring of education markets and organizations in 2022. The study reveals two main stories: the first is related to PhD students and the second concerns PhD graduates. In the first part, the reader can learn about the employment characteristics of graduate students, their motivation to combine study and work, the difficulties of combining study and work, and how the experience of student employment affects their current research activities and future plans. The second part allows us to evaluate the effects of combining study and work during PhD studies on career trajectories and success in the labor market after graduation. Main conclusions of the issue: - The main motivation for combining PhD studies with work is financial, as scholarship often do not exceed a living wage. Graduate students are ready to quit work if the size of the scholarship is comparable to the average salary (50 000 rubles). - The experience of combining study and work has almost no influence on the research success of postgraduate students. Students whose work is related to their dissertation topic and who work in science and higher education organizations are relatively more successful in research activity. - Experience of combining PhD studies and work increases the chances of being employed after graduation, promotes career advancement, and has a positive impact on wages if a PhD student develops a career in academic units or in non-academic organizations. PhD students were also more likely to defend their dissertations if they worked in academic units at universities during their studies. - The experience of working in academic organizations during their PhD studies increases the chances that careers of PhD graduates will be research-related. - The results of the study show that the practice of combining PhD studies with work in academic organizations is the most appropriate strategy for ensuring high research results in conditions of low scholarship support.
