Abstract: In the financial economics literature, the words method and methodology are used interchangeably. Most authors, unfortunately, use methodology when they describe their method of analysis. Although the dictionary refers to this usage as "a pretentious substitute" - and at least one economist calls the offenders "semi-literate" - I think there is a distinct, subconscious effort to elevate method to the higher conceptual level of methodology. This paper ponders the usage of the two terms by ruminating on the true nature of the methodology of financial economics.
