Abstract: The object of this paper is to present the main conclusions and recommendations from economic theory and applied economics in order to guide the introduction of copayments in health services. Specific objectives are designed to answer to three questions. First, what is the magnitude of expected efficiency improvement and what are the conditions under which it can be obtained?. Second, what are the effects of introducing copayments on financing, utilisation and equity of health services?. And third, what we know about the widespread use of copayments on pharmaceutical products in the international context? Classification-JEL :
