Abstract: Several developments have led in recent decades the theory of landscape on the way to a more holistic and qualitative approach closer to people. Newly qualified the landscape can now enrol in a full sensory approach to urban planning and serve the challenges of urban “sustainability”. More specifically, to what extent the so-called sustainable neighbourhoods respond or not a sensory quality and even more specific sound? Can they be seen as "quiet areas"? Conversely, how these neighbourhoods and multisensory landscapes can help us to reflect on the notion of calm in the city? To aboard these reflections, we propose firstly to discuss the potential links between sustainable urban development and a sensitive approach of space. Then we will detail the methodological steps and case studies of four researches [1, 2, 3, 4] that have helped to guide and test our results. The results themselves will first focus on what the quiet and calm of the possible spaces in the city identification criteria. More in detail, we will focus on the (sound)scapes of three northern European sustainable neighbourhoods and interrogate their qualification (or not) as "calm" before drawing attention to some final recommendations.
