Abstract:
"The fifth wave of the Panel Study 'Labour Market and Social Security' (PASS) includes an experimental Factorial Survey design, which aims to analyse the dynamics of job-related mobility decisions. About 5,000 persons were presented with five hypothetical job offers ('vignettes') each. These vignettes varied experimentally in several job characteristics including regional distance to respondents' place of living. For each offer respondents were asked to evaluate the attractiveness of the job offer, their willingness to accept the job, as well as their willingness to move to the new location. The random allocation of vignettes to interviewed persons ensures that all respondents are presented with similar job offers. Therewith the selectivity associated with real labour market data is overcome, where groups like employed and unemployed persons differ in their access to attractive job offers. At the same time, the method enables a less abstract questioning on the willingness to accept job offers or to move as it is possible with single item questions. This should enhance the comprehension in particular for groups with low educational background. This report provides an overview of the quality and structure of the data. In section 2 and 3 the specific question design are described and details on the vignette sample, the interview mode, the sample of respondents, and some technical aspects of the Factorial Survey are provided. Descriptive analyses and an overview on the realized sample are presented in section 4. Moreover, potential methodical problems (like difficulties in understanding or item non-response) are addressed in section 5. Section 6 concludes with a description of the data structure and first recommendations for analysing the Factorial Survey data are given." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
