Abstract: In the 1970's tourism in Puerto Rico was characterized by offering sun and beach destinations. Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) emerged creating many tourist establishments. These establishments have existed for over thirty years. Great Tourism is observed because it is modernized and acquires new technologies. Traditional Tourism sustains his tenure with classic service. This research identifies and evaluates indicators of persistence in the traditional hotel category in Puerto Rico. We conduct semistructured interviews with managers of eight hotels in four areas of the island. The variables examined included standard hotel management, preference items and intent of new visits. The results showed that service aspects, adaptation to new technologies and classical tourism elements form a balance to explain persistence of traditional hotels in Puerto Rico. We conclude that traditional tourism persists by adapting new elements and conservation of traditional treatment. This work contributes to the identification of elements of fit between modern and traditional hotels and provides important knowledge to Puerto Rico hotel operators
