Income Generation Potential of Rural Dairy Enterprise: A Study in Azamgarh District, Uttar Pradesh

Abstract: In the rural areas, crop and livestock operations are integrated into a local system where waste from each operation is processed and transformed into cheap input for the other. The surplus fodder and agricultural by-products are gainfully utilized for feeding the animals. Against this backdrop, this study explains the role of a dairy enterprise not only in earning profit for the cattle breeders but also in utilizing idle resources, such as crop residues, and the labor force. The present study analyzes the income generation potential of different milch bovines in the Azamgarh district, Uttar Pradesh. The results of this study prove that taming dairy animals not only generates substantial income, but also has the potential to create more income than agriculture. It also proves that the by-products of dairying, such as manure, help to improve the fertility and productivity of landholdings. Based on the results, this study suggests that the government as well as the general public should take more initiatives to accelerate the dairy farming in the rural areas, so that the national objectives of more equal distribution and sustainable development can be attained.
