Persistent Poverty and Excess Inequality: Latin America, 1970-1995

Juan Luis Londoño and Miguel Székely

No 4090, Research Department Publications from Inter-American Development Bank, Research Department

Abstract: The objective of this work is to assess the changes in poverty and inequality that have taken place in Latin America and the Caribbean from 1970 to 1995, with special emphasis on the 1990s. The main distinctive characteristic of the study is that rather than focusing on individual country experiences, as most of the literature on this subject has done, we produce aggregate indicators for the whole region.
