Determining the present value of losses resulting from injury

Gary Baker

Global Business and Economics Review, 2000, vol. 2, issue 2, 201-217

Abstract: In the United States, litigation often follows an accidental injury or death of an individual. In this paper, the method used in the United States to establish the economic damages resulting from an injury or death is outlined. The paper addresses the loss of wages, fringe benefits and household services. While there is general agreement as to the formula used to compute the economic loss, there is some disagreement as to what variables should be employed in the analysis. This paper presents the method for computing the economic loss and points out where alternative values may be used
