Institutions and dynamic capabilities: a bibliometric mapping of the field

Abstract:
The field connecting the dynamic capability and institution-based views has grown considerably in recent years, cementing institutions as an important consideration in studying the effects, magnitude, and origins of dynamic capabilities (DCs), as well as the nature and pressures of institutional environments. However, there is no bibliometric organisation in the field. To overcome this, we analysed a sample of 305 articles from the Web of Science database, published between 2007 and 2024, conducted production and co-citation analyses, and mapped the intellectual and conceptual structures. This analysis culminated in mapping the field's thematic evolution, where, despite the contemporary dominance of niche and basic themes and its growing production, the field is identified as emerging and still disjointed. Based on this, we suggest several future research avenues that may aid future researchers in pursuing work in this field productively and clarify its intellectual and conceptual structure.
