Information quality management of patent searches from the practical viewpoint

Abstract:
The intellectual property (IP) management departments of firms are required to provide the results of patent data searches for different purposes to support proper decision-making in patent and business management. This paper discusses some of the studies in which patent data and information quality have been treated, identifies the sources for patent data searches and categorises these from the practical viewpoint. The dimensions of information quality are grouped into input, means and output classes. A framework to determine and assess information quality of search results has been developed and proposed from the viewpoint of IP management department. By assessment of the dimensions to standardise the criteria of patent search results, IP management department will be able to provide objectively evaluated search results in accordance with the purposes of searches.
