Health literacy in preschool: evaluation of the e-Bug platform in Portugal

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the e-Bug platform in teaching health and citizenship education to preschool children. Through the implementation of the platform's practical activities, this study sought to promote health literacy and assess changes in children's hygiene habits, as well as their impact in the family context. The study analysed children's ideas about microorganisms and hygiene before and after the activities through interviews. The results showed that the platform was effective in improving children's knowledge, and a change in behaviour regarding their hygiene habits was observed, corroborated by questionnaires applied to caregivers. The importance of implementing educational interventions related to hygiene and infection prevention from an early age is highlighted, due to the greater likelihood of children implementing good habits in the future, as they are more predisposed to learning and forming attitudes.
