Abstract:
The aim of this study is to understand the perception of Guimarães citizens according to the level of practice, about the sports public policy programs, with a focus on the urban physical environment. A total of 1,282 adults, living in Guimarães, were interviewed. Regarding the urban physical environment, sport and tourism were reported as the most important areas of sports development in the city, with the view that there is no need for additional sports facilities, but the increase of municipal swimming pools, municipal gyms, and cycle pathways could be considered. As for the urban physical environment, the city football stadium and the two most important outdoor green parks were identified as the city sports infrastructures most well known. Still, most of the residents do not know about or do not recognise the sport city events. Sports equipment must be planned, respecting the needs and cultural sensitivities of the target population.
