Interpretive structural model and MICMAC for facilitators and barriers to small scale potato processing industry among self-employed farmers

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to identify the challenges and enablers for farmers in the potato processing industry in the Agra region, Uttar Pradesh, India. The study was exploratory in nature. It used the interview method for farmers which included open ended questions with a sample of five districts from the Agra region. The interpretive structural model (ISM) was used to determine the structural relationship between different challenges identified from the interviews with farmers. The results of the study were two-fold. It included enablers and challenges to PPI among farmers. The ISM results show that, decreasing land size was the problem of much concern and the root cause of the problem was low education level, unfavourable environmental factors and long supply chain. Further, MICMAC analysis helped to determine the most driving and dependence factors. Government policies, developing entrepreneurial intentions, technical know-how and expertise were found to be important enablers for PPI.
