Identify the new industrial sector under PAT: India

International Journal of Energy Technology and Policy, 2015, vol. 11, issue 2, 127-141

Abstract: India is emerging as a major player in both the global petrochemical and glass industries. The Energy Conservation Act 2001 empowers the central government to notify the designated consumer (DC) industries based on the annual energy consumption of an industry and comparing it to the threshold limit prescribed for that industrial sector. Industries are required to submit an annual energy consumption report to the designated agency through a mandatory reporting system, which would then enable the central government to decide on their DC status. The deepening and widening process is an iterative process; through this process the bureau will define the new threshold of annual energy consumption limit for each sector. The paper identifies new industrial sectors under PAT and assesses their threshold limit. For example, the threshold value of annual energy consumption for glass and petrochemical sector could be 5,000 mtoe and 10,000 mtoe respectively so that a large number of industries qualify as DCs for inclusion in the framework.
