International Journal of Industrial and Systems Engineering, 2026, vol. 53, issue 1, 121-146

Abstract: The study explores the role of multi-agent technology (MAT) in high-tech product manufacturing, which is a critical aspect of modern industrial automation. Through a comprehensive literature review, the researchers identified five key factors of high-tech manufacturing and 25 variables of MAT. They then developed a conceptual model and used structural equation modelling (SEM) to assess the priorities and interrelationships among these factors and variables. The findings reveal that the high-tech manufacturing process is the most important factor, followed by others, while production planning, resource agent, and intelligent shop floor management based on MAS are the top three prioritised MAT variables. The researchers conclude that implementing the prioritised MAT variables can automate the manufacturing system, improving process quality, product quality, productivity, and reducing maintenance efforts. This research provides valuable insights for high-tech manufacturers and researchers to enhance their knowledge and advance their manufacturing capabilities through the strategic application of multi-agent technology.
