Abstract:
This study, for the first time, combines two supportive tools: bibliometric analysis of scientific mapping and content analysis of 210 published documents on tourism destination (TD) to perform a comprehensive review of TD literature. Findings explore that prior works have concentrated only on empirical validation of multiple TD areas while ignoring theoretical perspective completely. The bibliometric analysis reveals that the number of TD publications is following an ascending pattern since 2009 that can be marked by low productivity, low average citations per document, and rising author collaborations. The content analysis explores eight distinct areas within TD research: 1) service quality in TD; 2) role of culture and heritage in TD; 3) TD loyalty; 4) branding procedure and brand equity; 5) customer behaviour; 6) technological aspects; 7) tourism during pandemic situation; 8) forms of tourism.
