International Journal of Manufacturing Technology and Management, 2009, vol. 17, issue 4, 327-336

Abstract: Drilling of Ti-6Al-4V with Supernitride coated carbide tool gave better performance in term of tool life compared to TiAlN coated carbide tool. The use of 25 m/min cutting speed shows improvement in tool life performance. Non-uniform flank wear, excessive chipping and micro-cracking were the dominant tool failure modes under most tested conditions. Adhesion, attrition and diffusion were the operating wear mechanism on both tools when drilling Ti-6Al-4V.
