Value stream mapping and theory of constraints in a screw company: generating ways for the implementation of Industry 4.0

Abstract:
Technologies emerge to improve processes in order to maximise results. Lean and theory of constraints (TOC) bring benefits to Industry 4.0 (I4.0) by achieving a customised way of manufacturing at scale to increase profitability. This study was carried out in a screw company, with the objective of proposing an action plan based on value stream mapping (VSM) and TOC with a focus on I4.0. Initially, the product studied was chosen, designing its process through the VSM. The five steps of TOC were applied in two processes to identify the bottleneck. Brainstorming was used to promote improvement opportunities and technology suggestions. The results found indicate the possibility of improving the stamping/deburring/classification process through sensing and an action plan was developed. The work related to VSM and I4.0 technologies facilitates the understanding of what has already been accomplished with the union of VSM and TOC and indicates the advantages found.
