Ferrous scrap

Conjunctura economiei mondiale / World Economic Studies, 2012
Abstract:
The article presents the development of the ferrous scrap market in 2011 and prospects for 2012. According to a Directive of the European Commission from October 2011, the articles regarding ferrous scrap will be referred to generically as „scrap†, even though it is about a material from a new production. The main importers of scrap, in the sense of the mentioned Directive, are, in order, Turkey, South Korea, China. In 2011, the demand has exceeded, at global level, the supply of scrap – especially the one of good quality, which reflected in the increase of the price difference between the two qualities. The demand’s prospects are uncertain. According to Tata Steel Europe group forecasts, the scrap prices will remain high in the following years, without excluding the possibility of some fluctuations.
