The Evolution of World Trade in 2014 and the Prospects for 2015-2016. Recent Trends in the World Trading System

Abstract: Drawing on data provided by the World Trade Organization (WTO) and other relevant international organizations, this paper analyzes the evolution of world trade in goods and services in 2014 and its prospects in 2015-2016. It outlines, among others: the salient features and main determinants of merchandise trade in 2013, its dynamics in terms of volume and value and geographical composition, as well as the major exporters and importers of goods worldwide. It also highlights the main trends shaping trade in services in 2013, and the major exporters and importers of services globally. The second part of the paper is devoted to examining current developments and trends in the international trading system, and is focused on four aspects: (1) assessing the prospects for the Doha Round after the Ninth WTO Ministerial Conference in December 2013, in Bali; (2) the growing interest of WTO members in plurilateral trade negotiations; (3) the recent rise in protectionist pressures and trade tensions among trading partners, and (4) the factors behind the recent surge in trade regionalism and the implications for the WTO.
