AN EVALUATION OF THE EUROPEAN UNION’S POSITION REGARDING THE CHINESE BELT AND ROAD INITIATIVE

Iulia Oehler-Şincai

Euroinfo, 2017, vol. 1, issue 5, 3-9

Abstract: The present investigation has two main objectives, related to highlighting the features and principles underpinning the Chinese Belt and Road initiative (BRI) and the EU position towards the BRI. The analysis of statements, recent official meetings results and relevant literature emphasizes that EU countries are receptive to the BRI, but many are still reluctant to fully recognize its potential benefits. Both the EU and China have a number of common objectives to promote connectivity and stability at regional and global level. However, the group of enthusiasts among the EU countries in relation to BRI is limited to Central and Eastern European countries, alongside Greece, Portugal,Spain and Italy, and the member states have not yet reached a coherent approach regarding BRI. Although no EU country intends to stay completely apart, most of the old EU member states aim first to understand all the long-term implications of this complex initiative and then to take a more active role.
