THE INSTRUMENTS FOR FOOD SAFETY IN THE EUROPEAN UNION

Mihai Bratu

Euroinfo, 2019, vol. 3, issue 1, 51-60

Abstract: Of the 6 regions of the World Health Organization, the European Region is the most severely affected by non-communicable diseases, representing the most important cause of illness and death. Four major non-transmissible diseases - cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and respiratory diseases - account for 77% of the burden of illness and almost 86% of premature mortality. Under these circumstances, the World Health Organization (Regional Committee for Europe) outlined the "Objectives of the European Union's Food Security Action Plan for 2015-2020". The Action Plan focuses on food and nutrition as factors that influence health and well-being in the European Region. This article aims to synthesize the instruments that ensure food security in the European Union, as well as the principles and objectives of the EU Action Plan for horizon 2020, which will contribute to improving the governance of the food system, promoting the health and well-being of the population.
