THE IMPACT OF BREXIT IN THE LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN. PERSPECTIVES OF THE UK'S RELATIONSHIP WITH THE REGION

Abstract: Starting with February 1, 2020, the UK officially left the EU. Both the UK and the EU are facing a new reality, being opened a new phase that will require the re-evaluation and reformulation of their external action priorities and perspectives. The magnitude of the consequences of Brexit is an unknown and forces the UK to redefine its relations not only with the EU but with the rest of the world, implicitly its relations with Latin America and the Caribbean region. If the EU trade agreements with third countries will continue to apply to the UK, the non-interruption of trade relations will be important after the transition period. Consequently, London proposed the conclusion of so-called “continuity agreements”, by maintaining at least the same conditions that link these states with the EU.The present paper seeks to provide an overview about the UK-LAC relationship and perspectives, with a brief evaluation of the process of redefining the commercial ties with the region.
