Abstract:
In December 2015 in Paris, the Parties reunited to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) agreed to limit the increase in global average temperature to below 2 °Cand ideally to 1.5 °C by the end of the current century compared to pre-industrial levels. As the energy sector is responsible for around two thirds of global greenhouse gases emissions (GHG), the transition to a decarbonised global energy system becomes essential to achieving climate change mitigation targets. Renewable energy is a key component of nationally determined contributions(NDC), the central instrument of implementation for the Parties to the Paris Agreement. Currently, the level of detail contained in the nationally determined contributions differs from a country to another, with little analysis on the role of renewable energy in meeting the GHG reduction targets.
