 EU RECENT INITIATIVES IN THE FIELD OF RENEWABLE ENERGIESEuroinfo, 2021, vol. 5, issue 1, 28-42 Abstract: The European Green Deal is the ambitious EU climate policy that aims for Europe to become the first climate neutral continent by 2050 and this requires a fundamental transformation of the entire European energy system. The Energy Union remains the main policy instrument to deliver this transformation, which aims at bringing secure, sustainable, competitive and affordable energy to all EU consumers -households and businesses. While Energy Union is a project launched in February 2015, based on five closely interrelated and mutually reinforcing dimensions, the European GreenDeal was launched in December 2019, before the Coronavirus Pandemic. It is obvious that the focus in energy and climate policy is put now on decarbonising the economy, market integration, energy efficiency, massive penetration of electric energy in the economy and huge financial funds are needed for attaining all these objectives. In this article, we propose, through a qualitative analysis, a brief presentation of the latest European initiatives aimed at developing green energy and improving environmental protection, as well as highlighting their role and importance in achieving the major objectives of the European Green Deal.
